The Everhart Museum’s “To Your Health!” Exhibit Review

I would highly recommend viewing the To Your Health! exhibit, presented by Cooper’s Seafood, at the Everhart Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania. You will learn about the history of alcohol, the fermentation process, as well as the biology of yeast.  The quantity of in-depth information provided about each subject matter is surprising.  For instance, the exhibit explains how Louis Pasteur was able to develop a hypothesis about the effects of bacteria on the human body by studying the yeast cells of spoiled French beer.

In addition, you will learn about the good and evils of consuming alcoholic beverages. The exhibit portrays the health benefits of hops and herbs, such as vanilla, cinnamon, clove, and cilantro, that are used in the making of beer and liquor.  On the other hand, the disadvantages of overconsumption of alcohol, such as liver and stomach disease, are briefly displayed to viewers.

Also, artwork and superstitions related to drinking alcohol are presented and discussed throughout the exhibit. For example, To Your Health! compares Gin Lane and Beer Street, two paintings by William Hogwarth, that depict the wicked effects of consuming gin in contrast to the honor of drinking beer. These paintings represent the deeper societal effects of selfishness, glutony and greed versus benevolence, moderation and generosity.  As for superstitions, if you are wanting to ward off drunkenness or any form of intoxication altogether, the exhibit recommends wearing Amethyst, the “Sobriety Stone”.

If you decide to view the exhibit, please share your thoughts and opinions. I would enjoy seeing more educational exhibits like To Your Health! at the Everhart Museum in the future.

Cheers to your health!
